How To Set Up An At-Home Office With An Elegant Touch

Are you including an office in the design of a brand new home? Are you making changes in your existing house that will now offer you space for an office? Either way, if you have decided to make it an elegant room, here are some ideas to help you create a room that is both attractive and unique.

The Furniture - Before you shop, consider how the room will be used.

  • Will your office be used for personal work or for business purposes?
  • Will you be having conferences in your at-home office, necessitating the inclusion of a larger table and several chairs?
  • Do you want to incorporate a reading area into the plan?

To establish the elegant atmosphere you have selected, consider choosing furniture that you might use in a living room or in a dining room setting. For example, rather than selecting a  business-type desk, choose a small formal dining room table, instead. Doing this will add interest and elegance to the room. Choose an elegant cabinet with drawers and shelves as part of the design for storage purposes. Mahogany or cherry would be among good selections for the wood because they provide a for a more formal look. The same goes for your chairs. Selecting chairs with elegant upholstery is one idea. Another good one would be to select rich leather for your chairs.  There are even elegant desks that are designed especially for computer equipment. Don't forget floor to ceiling book shelves.

Home Decor - Again, the decor you select will depend on whether you are using the home-office for business or for family work. If you are establishing a business office, enhance the walls with paintings or photographs of busy cities like New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. For a personal home office, select paintings or photographs of things your family enjoys. For example, if you love to go to the beach, framed pictures of your family would be perfect, especially if you place them in heavy gold frames to maintain an elegant feeling in the room.  A crystal chandelier and crystal table lamps would be good selections, too. Frame diplomas, certificates, licenses and other official documents in elegant frames to add formality to the setting.

As you select the furniture for your at-home office, be sure to let the clerk at the store know how you want to decorate. He or she will be happy to show you pieces that will work well in an elegant setting.
